Welcome to the wonderful world of dialysis! On behalf of the greater kidney community, we thank you for your desire to become a dialysis technician. This lesson will start with the role of the dialysis team and the typical duties and responsibilities of the dialysis technician. From there we will journey on to learn how laws like HIPAA and government and regulatory agencies guide dialysis care within the United States. Then we will learn about professional boundaries, different ways to communicate, and how important effective communication is to the dialysis team. No introduction in dialysis would be complete without examining safety measures and the need for proper body mechanics while caring for the patient. Lastly, we will review and practice some basic math calculations. If any of this seems overwhelming, that’s okay. Embrace it, move forward, ask for help, and be open to the experience!
